She’s Got The Look

September 3, 2008

woman with groceries What does your look say about you? Like it or not, other will pass judgment on you based solely on your appearance. As a successful woman entrepreneur, the key to success when it comes to your look is to consider your appearance part of packaging your brand.

Firstly, what you need to do is define your brand. Then, you need to decide how you will covey your message with your personal style.

Start by making a list of the emotions you want your brand to evoke. These words should help you communicate the quality of your products and/or services.

The next step is to define your target market. How does your market expect you to look? Are you conveying the right messages to your target market? A great clue is to look at how your target market packages themselves. Remember, we’re talking about your professional life, not your personal life; so if you’re comfortable in jeans and T-shirts, that’s fine–When you’re not in public. Whenever you leave the house, remember that you represent your brand. If your look makes you feel comfortable, attractive, fashionable, and above all, confident, then your overall self-confidence will soar, as will your brand.

Your packaging will convey that you are indeed a smart, savvy, and competent business woman.

The Perfect Concealer

September 2, 2008

Want to find the perfect shade of concealer?  Make your own.  You’ll need a very small jar/container (a really good idea: use the small sample jars that you get with makeup samples).  Put about a tablespoon of your foundation in the jar, cover it lightly with cheescloth and put in the refrigerator for several days until it is a creamy consistency.  There you have it, the perfect color of concealer!

Quick Image Fix for 2008

January 11, 2008

woman with good posture Last year, I was invited to an elementary school for an event in which people from different occupations would come in and give a short talk and then answer questions. Since I am a chiropractor, my topic was “Back Pack Safety.” On the day of the fair, I happily wore my daughter’s Lizzie McGuire book bag and was instructed to sit on a brightly-colored carpet with 20 first-graders. Their little eyes were upon me and they sparkled with energy.

I showed them the pink book bag that I had placed a 5 lb. weight in. We talked about how to wear a book bag and how not to. I told them that wearing their bookbag improperly leads to bad posture.

A little hand shot up and asked, “Why is bad posture so bad?” I knew how on a college-level to explain why posture is important, but how could I explain it to this adorable 6 year old?

So having everybody jump up, we all pretended to have horrible posture. I had them roll their shoulders forward, and jut their head out from their chest. Their little tummies pooched as I had them slouch. Now I said, look at your friends. “How do they look?”

The answers they gave were not what I had expected. I expected them to say “crooked” or “slouchy” but what they ended up saying is “sad”, “lonely”, and one little boy commented about his partner, “It looks like he has no friends.” I was amazed at the insight these children had and began to extrapolate this into my practice and to my life.

So many times I see women with horrible posture who walk in a room almost afraid, rounding their shoulders. Typically when I speak to these women, they lack confidence. Just a few conscious alterations and you can have a new look! Stand proud! When you walk in a room, throw your shoulders back, stand straight (it makes you look 5 lbs. less in the process) and tilt your head back to look proudly and confidently at the world in front of you.

Good posture is not only great for your health, but great for your image! If first impressions are made in split seconds, what does your posture say about you? Make your goal for 2008 to improve something easy! Improve how you carry yourself and do it with pride. Who knew that I would learn such a great lesson!

Even kiddos know, posture is the window to your soul!
