No one on this planet received an exemption card from experiencing depression, therefore it can happen to anyone in varying degrees.
There are various factors that will trigger the depression cycle such as your biological makeup, your childhood, your upbringing, or your reactions to any life events that occur for you. When you experience depression it is often linked to feelings such as shame, guilt, anxiety and anger.
If you think repetitive negative thoughts constantly the depression cycle kicks in
When we tend to get depressed we start to think very negatively about ourselves, our future and the world around us, rather everything is seen through gloomy glasses as bleak and hopeless and nothing can or will change. Thoughts will go through your head that you are useless and worthless etc. and these thoughts will go round and round constantly, and we think and remember and will have regrets of the past, as to what we should or should not have done.
Of course when we constantly stay trapped in this depression cycle it will lead us to experience physical sensations such as tiredness, fatigue, lethargy, have difficulty concentrating and remembering things, changes to our sleep patterns, our eating habits do change, and we do lose interest in our activities, hobbies and sex.
Our behaviour changes
As we are experiencing tiredness, and having difficulty with sleeping and eating, and of course all that negative thinking, we will end up doing less and less. We eventually stop doing all the tings we used to enjoy doing, and for some it gets that bad where they will want to stay in bed all day, and can no longer go to work. Of course we could even get to the stage where we will isolate ourselves from family and friends.
When you have succumbed to the deepest part of the depression it does make it hard for you to get up and reclaim your life, when you just do not have any energy left within you to motivate or inspire you to get a grip and move on.
The symptoms for depression could include the following:
- Increased irritability
- Increased levels of anxiety
- Constant negative thoughts about yourself, your situation and life in general
- Loss of energy
- There is no pleasure in the things you used to enjoy
- Sleeping way too much or not enough
- Feelings of hopelessness
- Withdraw from friends and family
- Have a preoccupation with death.
We can all feel down within ourselves from time to time, and what you find with depression it will linger and often does interfere with your ability to live a fulfilling life and to be able to cope with your daily stressors.
Are antidepressants necessary? Always check with your doctor.
Your doctor is the best person to seek advice whether you require antidepressants, of course when you suffer from depression it can be a chore just to get up and to get out of the house and go somewhere could feel like it is an impossible event, this is where taking antidepressants can help to take away the edge of your depression and help you to engage in therapy and help yourself to get out of a vicious cycle.
There are also some medications that can help to stop the negative thinking patterns that make it so difficult for us to see out of our depression as thoughts of “this will never end it will just keep going on forever” will make it that much harder to move forward. What you will find your doctor will be able to suggest the best therapies and antidepressants for you.
